Product Description
This icon presents Mary, the mother of our Lord Jesus Christ in the flesh, with her Son. Theotokos, or Mother of God, was a title lovingly ascribed to her since the early centuries of the Church as a way of affirming that the Son born of her was indeed Christ, the Savior of the World. This Jesus whom she held in her arms, though born as a helpless baby, is nonetheless fully God. Such is the honor and dignity bestowed by God upon the race of man, that He would deign to enter into His own creation by the humble means of childbirth. This child, born of the Virgin Mary and the Holy Spirit, born without the seed of man, bears within Him all the mysteries of creation and redemption. Though he weeps and must learn to walk and speak, He is the Messiah whom all creation eagerly awaited since the fall of man. This feeble Jewish girl, within whom Christ dwelt for nine months, retains awesome favor before the throne of God as a mother. For this reason, we seek her intercession and, like Christ, seek refuge in her embrace.
